Bullet Points: Storytelling

You may find it easier to describe your experience demonstrating a particular skill if you think about it as storytelling.

For example, if you are organized, your résumé needs to include “stories” about how you demonstrated your organizational skills.

The first bullet point below tells a story.  It will be remembered by an employer, long after they have forgotten the second point.

  • Scheduled access to corporate resources, including rooms, equipment, materials and books
  • Demonstrated strong organizational skills

It is helpful to keep in mind that the people you are competing with for an interview could also say they have “strong organizational skills”.  It’s the stories of how you demonstrated your organizational skills that will set you apart.

Take a minute now to scan your current résumé.

Ask yourself, “Does each bullet point tell a story?” “Does each bullet point create a picture of me in action?”
